The Federal Republic of Germany located in central Europe, stretches from the North Sea and Baltic Sea to the snow-capped Bavarian Alps. The country boasts at least five major geographical regions, each totally different in character. The official capital and largest city is Berlin, but many administrative roles are still carried on in Bonn, the former capital of West Germany. The country consists of romantic landscapes, enchanting castles, cosmopolitan cities, colourful festivals and friendly people. A land where history and culture come alive and whose complex past has made it an extraordinary country. A lasting image of the German people is of lederhosen-clad Bavarians raising beer steins at the famous Oktoberfest in Munich. The Romantic Road is a stunning journey from the River Main to the Alps offering the traveller one of the most beautiful and engaging combinations of scenery, cuisine and ambience that Germany can offer. The vibrant metropolis of Berlin lies in the middle of the state of Brandenburg, just a few miles away from countless pristine lakes, gothic and medieval castles, stately homes, abbeys, heaths, pine forests, river valleys and tree-lined country roads. Berlin still remains a city somewhat divided - the west embracing alternative lifestyles and energetic nightlife, the east a living museum of industrial, commercial urbanisation. Munich, a cosmopolitan, stylish city of museums, galleries, theatres, monuments, castles, exquisite Baroque and Renaissance churches, and idyllic beer gardens, it is one of the country’s most prosperous cities and the capital of Bavaria. It is also the home of the world famous Oktoberfest, a must for any true beer connoisseur.
