In the USA, visitors can discover several of the world's most exciting cities, some amazing landscapes, a strong sense of regionalism, more history than the country gives itself credit for and, perhaps, some of the most approachable citizens in the world. The continental US stretches across North America from the Pacific Ocean in the west, to the Atlantic Ocean in the east. It borders Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. Alaska extends from north-western Canada; Hawaii lies 2500 miles off the country's western coast, in the centre of the Pacific. Although it's hard to describe what makes New York buzz, it's the city's hyperactive rush that really draws people here. Visitors can’t miss the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park or Times Square. One of the country's most attractive cities, San Francisco possesses foggy, hilly streets that provide gorgeous views of San Francisco Bay and its famous bridges. It is a mixture of a city, with bustling Chinatown, clubby SoMa, hippie Haight-Ashbury and Italian North Beach. Fisherman's Wharf is a central tourist attraction and the gateway to Alcatraz, while Union Square is where many shoppers meet. Los Angeles is a feast of well known sights - Sunset Strip, Rodeo Drive or Hollywood Boulevard, Melrose or Venice Beach, Malibu and Beverly Hills. Across to Florida, and there's Miami Beach itself, a beautiful stretch of white sand lapped by clear blue sea. The heart of this is Ocean Drive, bordered on the east by the city's hippest beach and the west by a string of sidewalk cafes. In stark contrast with the rest of Miami, the Holocaust Memorial is one of the most exquisite and moving monuments you'll ever visit. Most people know New Orleans for its parties, particularly the indulgence of Mardi Gras or the year-round fun on Bourbon Street. Enthusiasts of historic architecture will rejoice in the French Quarter and grandiose Garden District, while visitors with a desire to take history home will adore the antique shops of Royal Street.
